There was a time when even a simple handkerchief could be something special. It might be tucked into a handbag, slipped into a pocket, given as a small gift, or carefully folded into a dresser drawer. And sometimes, it came in a box almost as pretty as the treasure inside.

Look at these two vintage handkerchief boxes! The one in front is marked *Imported Novelty Handkerchiefs — Made in Switzerland*. The other, with its bright colors, fanciful face, and cheerful flowers, seems to have been designed to delight before the box was even opened.
I wonder how many hands lifted those lids over the years. Perhaps one held a new handkerchief intended for a birthday gift. Perhaps another contained a little luxury purchased for oneself. We can only imagine the occasions, but the boxes have survived to give us a small glimpse of those everyday pleasures.
As the years passed, the presentation became simpler. The pretty illustrated boxes gave way to plainer cardboard packages, sometimes bearing only a store name or maker’s mark. Eventually, even the box became an afterthought.
And what of the handkerchief itself? Once a familiar part of daily dress, it has largely given way to disposable tissues. The little cloth square that might have been embroidered, edged in lace, or decorated with a delicate printed design is no longer the everyday companion it once was.
I find myself thinking that we have lost a little something along the way. Not necessarily anything grand or important, but the pleasure of an ordinary object made special by its presentation, its usefulness, and the care someone took in choosing it.
These two old boxes remind us that history isn’t always found in great events or important documents. Sometimes it is waiting in the smallest things — even in a box that once held a handkerchief.
And isn’t that one of the joys of collecting? We get to hold a little piece of yesterday and wonder about the lives that came before ours.
