A beautifully honest example of early American lighting, this primitive tin kerosene lamp carries the quiet story of everyday life—handcrafted, well-used, and enduring. With its soldered seams, fitted cork stopper, and tall glass chimney, it speaks to a time when light was made, not bought, and necessity shaped design.

This antique primitive tin kerosene lamp is a striking and authentic example of late 19th to early 20th century American domestic life. Constructed of hand-formed tin with visible soldered seams, the base reflects the work of a small tinsmith shop—its craftsmanship simple, practical, and enduring.

The round reservoir (font) features a wonderfully shaped finger-loop handle with a gently flared and subtly decorative edge—an uncommon touch that adds both charm and usability. The hand-soldered construction along the base edge is delightfully “evenly crude,” a hallmark of handwork rather than factory precision, and a detail collectors of primitive Americana truly appreciate.

A particularly interesting feature is the cork stopper. Thoughtfully made, it has a thicker visible top and a narrower, extended insertion section that fits tightly within the opening—suggesting care in design, likely to prevent leakage or evaporation. It removes with a gentle turning motion, indicating a well-fitted, original pairing.

The lamp retains its metal burner, which appears to be marked (possibly “Aquila,” though partially obscured), consistent with commonly used burners of the late 19th to early 20th century. It is paired with a tall, clear glass chimney in a Vienna-style form, with a softly rounded midsection and a thin, smooth top edge—indicative of a well-made example.

Altogether, this piece offers a wonderful representation of utilitarian lighting—likely used in a farmhouse, workshop, or modest dwelling. Its portability, durable tin construction, and practical features suggest it may even have served in more rugged environments, such as rural or early industrial settings.

Measurements

Base: 7 1/2″ diameter

Base depth: 2″

Burner height: 2 1/2″

Glass chimney height: 8″

Condition

Good antique condition with age-appropriate wear. The tin base shows a rich, natural patina with areas of darkening and surface wear consistent with use. Solder seams are visible and intact. The cork stopper fits tightly and appears to be well-matched to the piece. Burner shows age and use; markings are partially legible. Glass chimney is clear and well-formed with no noted cracks.

Historical & Collector’s Note

Lighting such as this was an essential part of daily life before widespread electrification. Unlike more refined parlor lamps, tin examples like this were valued for their durability and practicality. Often produced in small shops or by local tinsmiths, each piece carries subtle variations that make it uniquely its own.

While found in California, and evocative of rural or early community life—including possible mining or workshop use—its exact origin remains part of its quiet mystery. What remains certain is its role as a dependable source of light in an earlier time. A side note: A piece long held in a personal collection for 60 years.

A beautifully aged early American turned wooden goblet, rich in warmth and quiet character. With its flared form and hand-shaped stem, this small treen piece carries the simple elegance of 19th century craftsmanship—equally at home in a primitive kitchen or displayed among a thoughtful collection.

This charming small wooden goblet is a fine example of early American turned treen, dating to approximately the mid-19th century, circa 1830–1860.

Crafted from a dense hardwood—likely maple or fruitwood—it features a gently flared cup, a balanced turned stem, and a wide, stable base. The proportions are pleasing and practical, suggesting a utilitarian purpose while retaining a refined, understated beauty.

Pieces of this form are often associated with small measures, individual salts, or personal drinking cups. While sometimes described as Peaseware, this example is best understood as **Peaseware-style treen**, reflecting the same tradition of careful turning and everyday usefulness without a direct maker attribution.

The surface has developed a warm, mellow patina over time, with visible grain and natural wear that speaks to age and handling. The finish appears original and untouched.

Condition is very good for its age, with only minor chipping along the rim—honest wear consistent with use and nearly two centuries of life. No cracks or structural concerns are observed.

A wonderful addition to a primitive collection, early kitchen display, or shelf of smalls—this piece offers both history and quiet presence.

### **Measurements:**

* Height: 3 1/2 inches
* Base diameter: 2 inches
* Top diameter: 1 7/8 inches

### **Condition:**

* Original surface and patina
* Minor chips to rim
* No cracks or repairs observed

### **Collector’s Note:**

Small turned treen objects like this were essential elements of early domestic life, often handmade and used daily. Their survival today, especially in untouched condition, offers a tangible connection to 19th century kitchens and tables.

A wonderfully honest early tin match safe with pleasing squat proportions and time-softened patina — a humble yet deeply authentic primitive kitchen survivor.

This early squat-form tin match safe is a quietly compelling example of everyday Victorian-era kitchen utility, likely tinsmith-made or produced in a small early tinware shop. Formed of folded tin with fitted side panels, it reflects the practical ingenuity of late 19th to early 20th century household metalwork.

Designed to hang conveniently near the hearth or cookstove, the safe features a lift lid with embossed scroll decoration and a pierced hanging tab at the back. Its compact, sturdy form — broader than tall — gives it that especially desirable “squatty” primitive profile collectors seek.

The construction is particularly telling: the front, back, and bottom appear to be formed from a single folded sheet, with separately fitted sides — an economical and typical method of early tin manufacture. The surface shows a beautifully mellowed gray patina with scattered oxidation and honest age wear that speaks to long service in a working kitchen.

Pieces of this humble nature were essential household tools and are increasingly appreciated today for their authentic primitive character. It displays beautifully in farmhouse, early American, or hearth collections.

Measurements:

Width (front/back): 3-3/4″

Depth: 1-3/8″

Height at center back: 3″

Side width: 2-3/8″

Condition:
Gently aged antique condition with overall oxidation, surface wear, and darkened patina consistent with age and use. Lid operates properly. No major structural damage noted. Please review photos carefully for full condition detail.

Historical Note:
Wall-hung tin match safes became common in American kitchens in the late 1800s, keeping matches dry, accessible, and safely away from children while reducing fire risk near the hearth.

A scarce and honest little primitive that brings immediate authenticity to any early kitchen or hearth display.

A spectacular prairie bonnet for wearing or decorating purposes.

Inside drawstring to adjust the fit on the back of the neck. Also ties on the outside to gather the back. Ties on the front to secure under the chin. The bonnet appears to be a purchased bonnet and appears to have had little or no usage. I found a partial paper label still on one of the string ties.

Round hole at the top for hanging. The edge of the umbrella, itself, has a lovely embossed design at the top. On the back plate, too, there are two tiny slots. I’m not sure what for ???

Size of the holder is 5-1/2″ long, point to point, the length of the back plate. Point to point the width is 3-1/4″ wide. Length of the umbrella 2-1/2″long.

Condition: Some tweaks to the brass umbrella at the top points. Some surface rust inside and on the back. This is a thin gauge brass so over time would normally show some wear.

In this listing are three different horses to inspire you. All date from the late 1890’s to early 1900’s. The oldest is the flat back cutter with back cut in an odd shape. This horse appears to be handmade with the metal a heavier more sturdy weight. Horse has a nice detail to the head area. Size is 3-3/4″ long x 3″ tall. Condition is nice.

The smaller of the horses is 2″ x 3-1/4″. It also has a flat back with strap handle. Condition is good. Not perfect but good.

The larger horse is 3″ x 4″. It, too, has a flat back and a plain strap handle. Condition: The soldering of the front leg and chest area has broken away from the solder. Remainder of the outline still intact. Very presentable though and does not harm the look.

All three cutters sold as a lot.

Antique Tin Apple Corer – Early 1900s Hand-Formed Kitchen Primitive, T-Handle Farmhouse Tool

Dating from the early 1900s, this tin apple corer is a fine example of early American kitchen utility and handmade craftsmanship. Formed in the familiar T-handle design, its ends show the gentle hammering of handwork, and the solder seams reveal the tinsmith’s careful shaping and joining. The oval cutting tube is slightly irregular, giving the piece a wonderful authenticity—made for function, not perfection.

This pattern was widely produced in small tin shops and regional factories such as the Kreamer Manufacturing Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, known for their early hand-finished kitchenware. The tool’s rolled handle and soft-soldered joints suggest it was fashioned in that same tradition—an honest, working piece from a time when household goods were built by skilled hands.

A charming addition to any primitive kitchen collection, this early corer displays beautifully among old cutting boards, tin cookie cutters, or wooden rolling pins. Its aged tin patina and smooth wear speak to years of use and care in the heart of the old farmhouse kitchen. Perfect for display on a peg rack, nestled in a dough bowl, or arranged in a rustic kitchen vignette, where its humble form can be fully appreciated.

Condition:
Good antique condition with authentic age wear, light tarnish, and surface patina consistent with use.
