A rare and elegant glimpse into early 20th-century Parisian couture, this pair of original L. P. Hollander collar toiles captures the refined artistry of Edwardian tailoring. Made in Paris as sample pieces for an exclusive American fashion house, they embody both the precision of the atelier and the quiet grace of an era devoted to fine craftsmanship.

An extraordinary pair of surviving atelier samples from the Edwardian era, these detachable collar toiles were made in Paris expressly for L. P. Hollander & Co., the prestigious Boston and New York fashion house celebrated for importing fine Paris couture. Each piece bears the hand-stamped mark, “Made in Paris Expressly for L. P. Hollander & Co.”, dating them to around 1905–1915, when Hollander was among the foremost names in custom tailoring and imported design.

Both collars are fashioned from a fine linen or linen-cotton toile, characteristic of couture workroom prototypes. Each shows exquisite workmanship—delicate drawn-thread detailing along the top edge, a gracefully shaped V front, and hand overcasting along the lower edge. One collar includes a partially cut buttonhole, an unmistakable clue to its purpose as a presentation or fitting sample rather than a finished article.

Paris ateliers often created such toiles to demonstrate cut, line, and proportion before production. Few were saved, making this pair a remarkable survival from the inner workings of an early twentieth-century couture house. Their careful craftsmanship and unfinished details provide a rare insight into the design process that bridged Paris and American high fashion.

Whether framed for display, studied as historical textiles, or treasured as artifacts of couture history, these collars offer a direct link to the quiet hum of the Paris workrooms that once shaped Edwardian elegance.

Measurements (each):
Length: 14 ¾” end to end
Width: 2 ¼” at center front point

Condition:
Light age toning and minor marks from storage and handling. Both retain excellent structure and display beautifully.

Collector’s Note:
To hold these pieces is to feel the pulse of another age—the soft rustle of linen, the precision of handwork, and the silent concentration of a Paris seamstress shaping beauty from cloth. They speak of fashion’s golden age, when design was an art of both hand and heart, and every detail carried meaning.

A Note for Collectors and Scholars:
With their provenance and workroom character intact, this pair would make an exceptional addition to a museum, design archive, or serious private collection, offering a rare study example of early twentieth-century couture construction and transatlantic fashion collaboration.

A softly glowing vintage Alberta Lingerie nightgown from the 1940s to early 1950s, beautifully bias cut in blush pink rayon with lace-trimmed insets that sculpt and flatters the figure. An elegant glamour piece with a deep V front and back, offering both romance and wearability.

Styled by Alberta Lingerie, this exquisite vintage nightgown dates to the 1940s or very early 1950s, a period celebrated for fluid silhouettes and softly structured femininity. Cut on the bias, the gown drapes gracefully over the body, allowing the rayon fabric to fall with natural movement and elegance.

Rendered in a delicate light pink rayon, the design features a deep V neckline at both the front and back, framed by wide shoulder straps adorned with lace. The empire waist is softly defined, with a gathered bust line accented by lace insets arranged to enhance and emphasize the shape — a hallmark of refined mid-century lingerie design.

The skirt flows freely below, creating a swing silhouette that feels equally glamorous and comfortable. The hemline is finished with a narrow ruffle trimmed in lace, adding a subtle decorative flourish without overwhelming the clean lines of the gown.

Inside, the original Alberta Lingerie label remains intact, a quiet but important mark of quality from a respected mid-century lingerie maker known for elegant construction and flattering cuts.

Measurements (taken flat):
Length: approx. 61½ inches

Bust: approx. 36 inches

Waist: approx. 32 inches

No size tag is present; based on the measurements, this gown would best suit a modern approximate size 14–16. Please rely on measurements for best fit.

Condition
Excellent vintage condition with no tears or repairs noted. The gown appears unworn or very lightly worn. There is one faint oxidation spot on the lower front, not quite the size of a penny, subtle and consistent with age. It does not detract from the overall beauty or wearability of the piece.

A truly lovely and increasingly hard-to-find example of mid-century lingerie — perfect for wear, collection, or display, and as enchanting today as it was when first made.

A beautiful summer white petticoat from the Victorian or Edwardian time era. The cotton slip is embellished with a gorgeous machine embroidered ruffle of Broderie Anglaise embroidery. The 15″ wide ruffle is layered over a under ruffle of plain white fabric.

Eyelet beading trim and the lacing of blue silk ribbon separates the ruffle from the main body of the skirt. This certainly gives the petticoat an extra accent. The waist band has a drawstring for adjusting the fit.

The length of the petticoat is 36″ long from waist to the hem. 26″ around the waist, however, would adjust slightly smaller. This petticoat has been acquired from a small Ohio museum and does have the inventory number tag attached to the undergarment.

Condition: Petticoat has not been recently laundered, but clean, you may still find some oxidation from storage. It is in very nice condition, itself. However, the blue ribbon is shattered. It could be kept, replaced, or taken out. A note: on examination, I found the beading eyelet does not extend completely around the petticoat. Evidently the seamstress was short 2″, but used it anyway. The ribbon was just laced over top of this gap, so really doesn’t show. Besides it in on the back side.

Dating from the 1920s, this charming woman’s house dress captures the everyday artistry of a bygone era. It is beautifully home sewn in a red and black checked cotton—likely a semi-polished or mercerized weave, giving a soft, subtle sheen rather than a full gloss. The fabric remains sturdy, suggesting it saw little use and perhaps was never laundered.

The workmanship speaks of quiet skill. Buttons march down the front in a delightful rhythm—two, then a space, three together, another space, and then two again—an intentional and balanced arrangement. The skirt is carefully constructed of six gored panels, with the checks aligned as nearly as possible, revealing a thoughtful and precise maker.

Design details include dropped shoulders softly gathered for fullness, long straight sleeves with rickrack-trimmed cuffs, and a tidy collar and patch pockets edged in matching trim. A yoke across the shoulders completes the bodice back, and the skirt falls gracefully to mid-calf length.

Despite its fine condition and strong fabric, the dress bears irregular areas of fading—likely from sunlight exposure—scattered more heavily to the front, with lighter touches along the sleeves. A single tiny hole is noted but does not detract from its beauty or historic appeal.

Measurements (taken flat and doubled where appropriate):

Length: 47″ (neckline to hem at center back)

Shoulder width: 14″

Bust: 36″

Waist: 36″

Bodice length: 15½” (neckline to waist)

Skirt length: 29″ (waist to hem)

A lovely example of early 20th-century domestic dressmaking, treasured for its honest workmanship, period charm, and the gentle story told by its sun-faded checks.

Here is a fabulous matching coat and dress from the mid 1950’s. Made of gray (I believe rayon or rayon -cotton) faille yardage in a raised design weave. The dress and coat are spectacular with its hand block print design, what to me, looks to be an Egyptian influence.

The dress is made with a dropped waist with a fitted bodice. Raglan style short sleeves with cuff. Gusset set in underarm at the arm hole and sleeve. Deep V neck line. Full length (working) back zipper from neck line to below the hip area. Zipper is of metal. The top of skirt attaching to the bodice is made of soft boxed pleats 2″ wide. At inside where the pleats join the bodice a cheese cloth lining is attached on the skirt. This cheese cloth is just partial the length of the skirt. It is in one of these seams the only label is attached. Although the label is not much of a clue, I wonder if the ensemble professionally made, special order? (See label photo). Maybe you will have more thoughts?

Measurement of dress: 32″ bust, 26″ around the natural waist. 34″ hip. Length from the neck line to hem is 46″ in length. About 14″ across from shoulder to shoulder.

Coat is long and loose fitting with no front closures. It is completely lined in a white acetate fabric. Sleeve length, with a cuff, extends just below the elbows. The sleeves of the coat are also raglan. Small hidden pocket on either side seam of the coat.

Length of the coat, neck to hem is 46″ long. Shoulder to shoulder is about 17″ across. Raglan sleeve from the neck line to bottom of sleeve is 19″ long. Cuff area of the sleeve is 3″ wide. Circumference around the bottom of the coat is 108″.

Block printing on the coat features three different prints down the center back. Plus a scattering of four more on either side. Now, there is some ink bleeding of the block print onto the coat’s white lining. Indicating the printing was done after the garment was assembled. Scale of the prints on the coat are 7″ to 10″ in height. The dress features four prints on the front of bodice. Each are 5″ tall.

Also a little soiling on the inside lining and front opening at the neck line of the coat. A small minor repair also is needed on one shoulder seam where the stitching has come loose. A marvelous interesting outfit with needing a bit of fussing, meaning it needs to be pressed, possibly cleaned, if you desire, and of course the seamed mended at the shoulder. Was this a manufacture garment for the masses or limited? I have no idea. I will tell you I acquired it years and years ago from upstate New York.

More photos available if needed.

Dating from the early 1900’s, a white dimity cotton long half apron. This pretty apron is embellished at the hem and edge of ties with rick rack lace. Creating this type of lace is very intriguing, as each rosette, or circle is formed, then joined with needlework to create the lace yardage. I have seen over the years a few textiles with this type of lace but not many to this extent of workmanship, although I know it was done.

The apron is 32-1/2″ long, including the 3-1/2″ wide lace at the hem. The waist is 22″ across to the ties. The ties, themselves are 34″ long, including the lace edge.

Condition: Not recently laundered but nice condition with a tad of oxidation.
Truly one of a kind apron.
