Two Little Survivors from the Nursery

Offered here is a pair of authentic antique cloth doll bodies dating to the early 20th century. Both dolls have lost their heads over the years, yet they still preserve intriguing construction details and period clothing that offer a glimpse into the toys once cherished in Victorian and Edwardian nurseries.

They are being offered together as a single lot, ideal for collectors, restorers, or those who enjoy the character of untouched antique pieces.

Larger Doll – Cry Doll with Bisque Hands

The larger doll measures approximately 11 inches tall and features a traditional cloth body with bisque lower arms and hands. When the small cords with blue bead pulls are gently drawn, the cry mechanism still functions, producing the soft sound typical of early mechanical dolls.

Two cords exit through small factory-made holes at the side of the waist, one blue and one tan. Their placement and construction appear original, with no evidence of later repair.

The body is firmly stuffed, and the legs have a slightly “crunchy” feel consistent with early excelsior or straw stuffing, commonly used in antique doll bodies.

Based on the construction — including the way the stuffing stops just above the shoulders — this body appears to have originally held a bisque shoulder head, a style widely produced in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Original Blue Dress

The doll retains a charming blue cotton dress with lace yoke and printed border hem. Close examination shows both stitching and traces of early adhesive along the back opening and near the armhole, suggesting the garment may be factory original to the doll.

The printed border at the hem is especially attractive and reflects textile fashions popular in children’s clothing in the early 1900s.

Undergarments and knit stockings remain with the doll, all showing honest age wear and gentle soil from time and handling.

Smaller Doll Body

The second doll measures approximately 5 inches in height and retains its cloth body, composition arms, and simple white dress. (no legs).

The neck opening on this doll appears to be round and suited for a socket-style head, which suggests it may date slightly later than the larger doll, possibly from the early decades of the 20th century.

Possible Origin

The larger doll body, with bisque hands and cry mechanism, is likely of German manufacture, as many bisque heads produced by firms such as Armand Marseille or Kestner were paired with cloth bodies like this for export to the American market.

Without the original heads, the exact maker cannot be confirmed.

This early 20th century handmade doll cape speaks to the latter — a one-of-a-kind creation that feels as though it was fashioned by a skilled and imaginative mother for a cherished doll, perhaps for a special occasion rather than everyday handling.

Hand-stitched throughout, the cape is fashioned from rich brown silk taffeta with a softly textured surface and subtle woven pattern. The silk retains its luminous character and gentle drape. Accents of blue silk panels and applied geometric trim lend visual contrast and suggest an Arts & Crafts influence transitioning toward early Deco design, placing the piece comfortably circa 1915–1925.

The construction is particularly noteworthy. Fitted shoulders and a sculptural hood give the garment architectural presence. The original interior structural inserts (cardboard forms within the hood and shoulder areas) remain intact, preserving the intended silhouette. These elements appear original and have been left undisturbed in the interest of historical integrity.

The cape is open at the back, indicating it was likely designed for a specific doll form rather than general play use. It would best suit a doll approximately 22-24 inches in height, though exact fit would depend upon the doll’s shoulder width and body style.

Extra note: Condition:
This cape presents beautifully and appears to have been carefully preserved rather than actively played with. The silk retains its soft sheen and structure. There are small areas of minor fraying and slight silk weakening consistent with the natural aging of early 20th century silk taffeta. These areas are age-related rather than the result of heavy handling. Hand stitching remains intact and secure except for a few missing stitches in one shoulder seam.

Measurements:
Length from shoulder to hem 16″ long. Shoulder length 4-1/2″ long from neck to arm. Measuring from one side to the other around the face area of hood is 14″. Depth of the bonnet is 10″ from one side to the other. 8″ at the neck line side to side.

This is not a factory-produced accessory but a thoughtfully executed handmade garment — possibly intended for display, portrait, or a meaningful occasion. It carries a quiet theatrical charm and the unmistakable presence of a personal creation.

A distinctive and uncommon addition for collectors of antique dolls, early doll garments, or those who value rare handmade textiles with story and individuality.

Size measurement: Cape is 14-1/2″ long x 6″ wide. When tied around the neck of a doll it would be about 6″ across, from shoulder to shoulder. The hat is 10-1/2″ around the inside opening. Height is 4″ to 4-1/2″ deep. Probably fitting a doll’s head about the size of a small orange.

Condition: It appears never have been played with. In other words, nice condition.

This antique Victorian doll coat and matching velvet tam hat date to the late 19th century and were clearly home sewn with care, using quality materials and thoughtful detailing typical of doll garments made to echo adult fashion of the period.

The coat is fashioned from black silk taffeta, woven with subtle horizontal ribbing that gives the surface depth and quiet sheen. It is fully lined in blue polished cotton, a pleasing and unexpected contrast visible at the interior. The back is neatly seamed, allowing the coat to fall properly on the doll’s form.

Delicate lace trim adorns the neckline, sleeve cuffs, and hem, while lace-applied pockets decorate the front — a particularly charming and somewhat uncommon feature. A narrow braid separates the lace hem from the body of the coat, grounding the design with structure and period correctness. The front closes with tiny round black buttons, one of which is missing, as noted.

Accompanying the coat is a round black velvet tam-style hat, softly structured and finished with a pleated lace edging at the rim. It complements the coat beautifully and appears to have been made as part of the same ensemble.

Overall very nice antique condition. There is some wear to the braid at the hem, consistent with age and use, and one small button is missing. These honest signs of wear do not detract from the display appeal and instead lend authenticity to this well-preserved Victorian doll outfit.

A wonderful piece for collectors of antique dolls, period costume, or those who appreciate the artistry of 19th-century handwork on a miniature scale.

Dating Note:
Based on fabric choice, hand-sewn construction, lace trimming, and overall cut, this doll coat and hat ensemble dates to the late Victorian period, circa 1885–1895. The styling closely reflects contemporary women’s outerwear of the era, thoughtfully translated into miniature form for a well-loved doll.

This ensemble is well suited to French fashion dolls and fine German bisque dolls of the late 19th century, particularly those produced by Jumeau, Bru, Steiner, or their German contemporaries, where finely detailed, hand-sewn garments were prized.

Made of white cotton, the case is edged in a decorative lace trim on three sides. Bottom of the sham is fastened with three buttons to handmade button holes.

An adorable find, the case is 11″ across x 8″ wide top to bottom. The measurement includes the 1-1/2″ wide trim on the sides and top. A pillow about the size of 8″ x 5-1/2″ would fit in nicely.

Condition: Consistent with age you will find a couple small holes/pulls in the lace. Otherwise quite nice.

Ready for a pillow form or stuffing, this would be a treat for your dolly’s bed.

The tiny bisque doll is a 2-inch jointed figure with string-tied movable arms and legs—a style most commonly produced in Japan during the late 1920s and early 1930s, when Japanese factories became major exporters of small novelty dolls to American five-and-dime stores. These little dolls often appeared as stocking stuffers, party favors, or inexpensive children’s toys.

Her original clothing remains intact: a small yellow handmade dress and soft pink thread around the neckline, showing the sweet improvised costume-making typical of children during this period. Condition is very nice, with only gentle age wear.

The Baby Bottle

The miniature glass doll baby bottle measures 2¼ inches tall and approx. ½ inch in diameter at the base. Its form is characteristic of doll bottles from the 1920s–30s, and it wears a charming hand-knitted sleeve in pale blue with pink trim. As is common with bottles of this age, the original thin natural-rubber nipple has not survived.

The Wool Doll Bib

The soft cream wool bib, measuring 2¼ inches wide and 3½ inches long, is edged in delicate pink embroidery. This piece reflects the long tradition of children learning handwork and sewing small garments for their dolls. Though sized for a larger doll than the tiny bisque baby, it adds a wonderfully personal, homemade touch.

The Box

The grouping rests in its old white box, the lid wrapped in cheerful holly-and-berry Christmas paper—a print style widely used during the late 1920s to 1930s. A vintage Christmas seal remains on the bottom, further supporting the dating and lending a nostalgic holiday charm.

A Captivating Early 20th-Century Ensemble

Sets preserved like this—still grouped exactly as they were stored decades ago—are especially evocative. Collector’s Note

During the 1920s–1930s, Japan became a major source for small bisque novelty dolls exported to the United States. Jointed examples like this one, especially with original handmade clothing and companion accessories, are more desirable and increasingly harder to find as intact sets. The charming mix of store-bought and handmade items is exactly what makes early childhood assemblages so delightful to collectors.

What little girl wouldn’t have liked to invite her dolls to a festive table set with this little aluminum silverware flatware. Marked “GERMANY” the utensils have a curved shape with a dot impression on each of the handles. Each set consist of a knife, fork and spoon.

Condition of all are good with only slight gentle ware from time. Knife is 3-1/2″ long. Fork is 3-1/4″ long. Spoon is 3-1/4″ long.

A fun little set for a doll room .

Back opening has no fastenings and has a short tear below the back opening. I found this is not an uncommon occurance with garments I have had over the years. It could be easily mended.

Measurements: It is 11″ around the waist. Length is 11-1/2″ long. Circumference around the bottom hem is 57″. A very full slip.

It has a slatted wooden top with folding legs which fit into the underside of the top for easy storage.

The size is 14″ in length x 5″ wide . Height is 5-1/4″ tall. Condition is good.

Suitable for display in a doll room or laundry room. Or equally suitable for your decorative imagination. A cute toy from the past! A cute rustic farmhouse country child’s primitive.

Simple constructed of a boat style neck line and short sleeves. The edge of the sleeve has elastic but has lost its stretch. No fastenings on the blouse.

The skirt is gathered with a high waist band. Inside of the band is lined in a voile cotton. No fastenings on the waistband.

Measurement of the blouse: Center back from the top to the hem is 7-1/2″ long. 6-12″ across from shoulder to shoulder. 14″ around the chest area. 16″ around the hem.

Skirt Measurement: 9-1/2″ from the top of the waist to the hem. Width of the waistband is 2″ wide. Measurement around the waistband is 9″ around.

Condition is clean and quite nice even though very simple construction.
