A lovely quartet of late-Victorian damask napkins, woven in a warm gold-and-off white plaid with delicate floral paneling and original self-fringe. A beautiful choice for primitive farmhouse décor, period table settings, or for collectors who appreciate the quiet elegance of turn-of-the-century linens.

These four charming napkins are a wonderfully preserved example of late-19th to early-20th century table linens, blending the delicacy of damask weaving with the cheerful warmth of a golden plaid. Each napkin is woven with a soft cream ground accented by golden stripes that form a classic over-plaid, the intersections containing small, beautifully worked floral damask motifs. This combination of plaid and floral panels is very much in keeping with household linens produced between the 1890s and 1910s, a period when table settings were both decorative and practical.

The napkins are finished with original self-fringe, created by pulling the warp threads rather than hemming — a detail often used in finer households during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The texture is smooth and lightly crisp, with the subtle sheen and slub of linen or a linen-rich union weave. The quality of the threads and the clarity of the pattern suggest skilled weaving on early mechanized looms.

Their sunny gold coloration is especially lovely — bright enough to add warmth to a primitive or farmhouse table, yet elegant enough for Victorian-style holiday settings, tea services, or display in a cupboard or open shelf. Each piece remains strong and attractive, showing the natural variations and charm expected of antique linens but no damage that distracts from use or display.

A graceful, usable set from a time when even everyday linens were made with intention, craftsmanship, and beauty.

SIZE: 13-1/2″ Square including the 1-1/2″ wide fringe. Condition is very nice and expertly pressed.

Historical Note

By the 1890s, table linens were transitioning from plain, pure-white damasks to include decorative stripes, borders, and color accents. Self-fringed edges were fashionable for both formal and informal dining, offering a delicate, slightly handmade look. The gold plaid set reflects this elegant period of domestic style, when dining textiles became both practical and aesthetically pleasing — meant to be seen, admired, and enjoyed.

A beautifully worked antique Hardanger doily, delicately hand-embroidered on fine linen, showcasing intricate drawn thread work and softly sculpted satin stitching in a timeless Scandinavian design.

This charming antique Hardanger doily is a fine example of traditional Scandinavian needlework, meticulously hand-stitched on a crisp, open-weave linen ground. Measuring approximately 5 inches square, it is a petite yet striking piece, rich in both texture and craftsmanship.

At its center lies a classic Hardanger motif—carefully cut and withdrawn threads forming a geometric lattice, accented with decorative needle weaving and picot-like details. Surrounding this openwork panel are beautifully executed satin stitches, creating soft, sculptural shapes that lend depth and quiet elegance to the design.

The border is particularly appealing, featuring a drawn thread band framed by a gently scalloped edge, each curve neatly finished and consistent—a testament to the maker’s skill and patience.

The linen ground has a lovely natural tone, slightly warm and organic, which complements the creamy cotton thread beautifully. The piece remains in very good vintage condition, with no notable damage—clean, structurally sound, and ready to be enjoyed.

**Fabric & Technique Note:**
Worked on a traditional even-weave linen suitable for counted thread embroidery, this piece features classic Hardanger techniques including satin stitch blocks, withdrawn thread work, needle weaving, and decorative open filling stitches—hallmarks of early to mid-20th century handwork.

**Measurements:**
Approximately 5 inches square

## **Condition**

Very good vintage condition
No visible stains, holes, or structural issues
Crisp stitching and well-preserved openwork

## **Collector’s Note**

Hardanger embroidery, with its origins in Norway, became especially popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, often used for small domestic linens such as doilies, tray cloths, and decorative mats. Pieces of this size were frequently made as practice works or gifts, yet the quality here suggests a confident and experienced hand.

## **Styling Ideas**

Perfect for display beneath a small porcelain piece, a candle, or a treasured object
Lovely layered over rustic linen for a farmhouse or primitive aesthetic
A beautiful addition to a collection of antique needlework or textile studies

A graceful antique oval linen doily adorned with a finely stitched Gothic monogram “D” and encircled by a soft clover border. With its crisp white tone and gently scalloped edge, this elegant piece brings a quiet freshness to spring tables, dressers, or layered farmhouse displays.

Delicate yet quietly striking, this vintage white linen oval doily reflects the refined needlework traditions of the early 20th century. At its center rests a beautifully worked Gothic monogram “D,” stitched in a classic raised style that lends both texture and presence.

Surrounding the field is a subtle woven clover motif — a particularly charming detail that makes this piece especially fitting for spring decorating or St. Patrick’s seasonal displays, while remaining neutral enough for year-round use. The softly scalloped edge frames the form with gentle movement and traditional appeal.

The fabric appears to be a fine, lightweight linen with a smooth hand and semi-sheer quality, typical of well-made decorative household linens of the period. It drapes beautifully and presses crisply.

**Condition:**
Gently used vintage condition. There is light wear noted along the padded satin stitch border (as shown), consistent with careful use and age. The piece remains clean, fresh, and very displayable.

**Measurements:**
• Length: 26 inches
• Width: 16 1/2 inches
• Color: crisp white
• Monogram: Gothic letter D

This elegant oval would be lovely on a vanity, side table, buffet, or layered into a romantic farmhouse or cottage interior.
### **Collector’s Note**

Monogrammed household linens were cherished personal items in the late Victorian through early 20th-century home, often prepared as part of a bride’s trousseau. Pieces featuring botanical woven borders, like this clover design, were especially popular for their symbolism of luck, renewal, and domestic grace.

An elegant antique three-piece white console doily set dating to the **early 1930s, possibly late 1920s**, featuring romantic floral Schiffi chemical lace with softly scalloped white linen centers. Designed for use on a sideboard or buffet, this refined set reflects the decorative traditions of the early twentieth century home.

This attractive antique three-piece console doily set dates to the **early 1930s**, a period when decorative lace textiles remained an essential element of well-appointed interiors. Such sets were commonly arranged on a sideboard or buffet, providing both beauty and protection for fine furniture.

Traditionally, the two smaller doilies would have held candlesticks—often glass, china, or pottery—while the larger center mat supported an open bowl. That bowl might have been filled with fruit or flowers, or simply left unadorned to showcase the lacework itself.

The design features a romantic repeating **floral pattern executed in chemical lace**, a technique especially popular during the late 1920s and 1930s for its delicate appearance and durability. The lace surrounds a softly scalloped center of **white linen**, offering a pleasing contrast in texture and lending structure to the overall design. The balance between lace and linen reflects the refined yet practical aesthetic of the early 1930s household.

This timeless console set lends itself beautifully to traditional interiors, cottage-style homes, or layered vintage displays.

**Measurements:**
• Smaller doilies: approximately **9¼ inches diameter** (each)
• Larger doily: approximately **12½ inches diameter**

**Condition:**
Good antique condition. Clean and well-preserved, with light, age-appropriate wear consistent with careful use. No major flaws noted.

A charming and versatile early twentieth-century console set, offering both decorative appeal and a glimpse into everyday domestic life of the 1930s.

A refined antique set of Victorian-era dining doilies, featuring star-pattern damask centers framed by exquisite hand-crocheted lace. Once used beneath dinner and dessert plates, these elegant survivors speak to a time of formal entertaining, careful household management, and gracious table presentation.

This antique table set of **Victorian-era plate doilies** offers a glimpse into the refined rituals of formal dining at the turn of the 20th century. Intended for placement beneath individual plates, such doilies were a common and admired practice during well-appointed dinner parties, protecting fine tables while lending beauty and symmetry to the setting.

The set includes **two sizes**, traditionally used for **dinner plates and dessert or fruit courses**, all that remains of what was once likely a more extensive service. Each doily is centered with a **woven cotton damask fabric featuring a repeating star motif**, a pattern favored for its subtle elegance and light-catching quality.

Surrounding the centers is a beautifully executed **hand-crocheted lace trim**, displaying raised, scrolling motifs characteristic of **Irish crochet–influenced lacework** rather than bobbin lace. The workmanship is fine and even, reflecting skilled hands and many hours of careful labor.

These doilies came from a **Buffalo, New York family**, and their quality, coordination, and survival suggest a household of comfortable means—one accustomed to entertaining and supported by the time (and likely help) required for laundering, starching, and meticulous ironing.

Today, they remain both **decorative and evocative**—lovely displayed on a table, sideboard, or beneath treasured china, and especially appealing to collectors of antique textiles and formal

**Details**
* Large size is 12-1/2″ in diameter – lace edging, itself is 3″ wide – 5 in the lot – Note unraveling of a bit of trim on one doily edge. (see photo)
*Small size is 8-1/2″ in diameter – lace edging, itself is 2-1/2″ wide – 8 in the lot
Stored away for years and have not been laundered.

* Era: Late Victorian to early Edwardian, c. 1890–1910
* Construction: Hand-crocheted lace with woven cotton damask centers
* Pattern: Star motif damask
* Condition: Very good antique condition with light, age-appropriate wear. One large doily does have an edge of the crochet that has unraveled from being caught.
* Origin: Buffalo, New York estate

Collector’s Note:

Star-pattern damask is encountered far less frequently than floral or scroll motifs in 19th-century table linens. Its geometric precision required skilled loom work and was typically reserved for higher-quality household textiles rather than everyday use. Such motifs were favored for formal dining and “best” linens, particularly in households accustomed to entertaining with care and ceremony.

While stars were not an official military designation in domestic table settings, the motif carried associations of order, rank, and refinement. As such, star damask linens would have been especially suitable in socially prominent homes, including those of professional or military families, where formal presentation at the table reflected both hospitality and status.
