Description

A charming little survivor of the Jazz Age, this ribbed brass clamshell coin purse carries all the romance of early Art Deco design—complete with its original wrist chain and a wonderfully plush black velvet interior. A petite treasure perfect for collectors, display, or period-style accessorizing.

This delightful Art Deco brass clamshell coin purse, dating to the 1920s–1930s, is a miniature study in style and craftsmanship. Its ribbed, scallop-inspired form reflects the Deco fascination with sleek, stylized interpretations of nature, and this example is especially charming for its slightly larger size and the gentle sculptural depth of its shell-like ridges.

Made of solid, heavy cast brass—not the thin pressed metal seen in many lesser examples—it has developed a warm, even patina that beautifully suits its age. The top features a pair of whimsical brass loops that serve as the closure, a detail often associated with Germanic or Central European novelty metalwork of the interwar years. A sturdy wrist-length chain allows it to be carried while dancing or strolling, or even hung from a belt or chatelaine hook, as some early 20th-century wearers preferred.

Inside, the purse opens to reveal its loveliest surprise: a rich black velvet lining, still soft and intact. Velvet interiors were reserved for the better-quality miniature purses of the era, adding a little luxury while cushioning coins or keepsakes.

A wonderfully charismatic little Deco purse—substantial in feel, charming in form, and full of the personality that makes these miniature metal accessories so collectible.
