This lovely hand-embroidered doily is worked in the bold, richly textured style of Mountmellick embroidery, a form of whitework that originated in Ireland during the early 19th century. True to the tradition, it features raised floral and leaf motifs, padded satin stitches, clusters of French knots, buttonholed rings, and trailing stems, all executed in matte white cotton thread for a striking sculptural effect. Beautiful raised monogram M at the center.
The embroidery rests on a sturdy white ground, differing from the heavy satin jean cotton of classic Mountmellick pieces, yet retaining all the artistry of the style. A close look reveals that this doily once had the traditional knotted fringe border, later removed, leaving behind the edge where it was anchored.
